Goa is a great place to observe an array of wildlife, and bird watchers in particular will enjoy the large array of brightly coloured birds that frequent the trees, such as parrots and mynah birds. The Ruby Throated Yellow Bulbul is of particular importance, being considered to be the official bird of Goa.

Much of Goa is covered by dense forests and areas of woodland, much of which is state owned and well managed. The main areas of forest within Goa lie on the eastern side of the state and are famous for their exceptional diversity.

Goa is filled with coconut plantations, mango forests, enormous bamboo plants and large National Parks, all of which have much to offer tourists. Look out for the large crocodiles, which can often be found lazing in the sunshine alongside the river banks.

Wildlife Sanctuaries

The main wildlife sanctuaries in Goa are listed below, a number of which lie within the main coastal regions. When visiting Goa's main wildlife parks you can expect to find boar, deer, gazelle, hyena, Indian elephants, porcupines, panther, sloth, large squirrels, tigers, woodpeckers, vultures and gaur (the official animal of the state). When visiting one of these parks, be sure to bring your camera as you never quite know what you might encounter.
